The US government's Bitcoin reserves have skyrocketed to an estimated value of $36 billion, cementing its position as one of the world's largest holders of cryptocurrency, according to a statement on Tuesday.
This huge increase follows a record seizure of nearly 130,000 BTC, linked to a massive cryptocurrency scam and forced labor network based in Cambodia.
The Department of Justice announced that this was the largest seizure in its history, a move coordinated with the Treasury Department's sweeping sanctions against the criminal organization led by former Chinese citizen Chen Zhi.
According to an indictment filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, Zhi faces charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. In a separate filing, prosecutors requested the seizure of 127,271 BTC related to the case.
