The US Department of Justice is investigating a leak involving Coinbase customer service agents in India, who allegedly accepted bribes to grant criminals access to user data.

According to a May 19 Bloomberg report, Justice Department investigators are examining the data breach, which Coinbase made public on May 15.

The company revealed that a group of contractors, who have since been fired, misused their access to systems to steal data from a small group of customers.

Paul Grewal, Coinbase's chief legal officer, stated the company is cooperating with the Department of Justice and other US and international law enforcement agencies, and supports bringing criminal charges against those responsible.

Although Coinbase reported that "no passwords, private keys or funds were exposed," the breach resulted in social engineering attacks against users, including a Sequoia Capital partner, with losses estimated at $400 million.
