Coinbase has asked the US Office of Government Ethics to lift a rule that prevents SEC staff from owning cryptocurrencies.

Paul Grewal, Coinbase's chief legal officer, has argued that SEC staff should use cryptocurrencies to better understand how they work and how to effectively regulate them.

His open letters to OGE acting director Jamieson Greer and SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, shared on X on April 25, emphasized this point.

He further explained that allowing staff to own cryptocurrencies is crucial to acquiring the knowledge needed to develop practical regulatory frameworks for digital securities.
