Bitfinex Hacker Gets 5 Years Prison Sentence

The hacker behind the hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex, Ilya Lichtenstein, has been sentenced to five years in a US prison for laundering the stolen proceeds, according to a Bloomberg report on 14 November.

Lichtenstein, along with his wife Heather Morgan who used the alias Razzlekhan, pleaded guilty to their involvement in the 2016 hack of the trading platform, which resulted in the theft of almost 120,000 Bitcoin.

The stolen crypto, valued at approximately $70 million at the time of the theft, had risen in value to over $4.5 billion by the time of their arrest.

At today's prices, the stolen assets would be worth more than double that amount.
