On February 18, Coinbase Commerce product manager Lauren Dowling announced the company has removed support for native bitcoin and other UTXO coins from its merchant payment platform.
According to Dowling, the decision has been made due to difficulties in delivering updates to its EVM payment protocol for Bitcoin.
The new Commerce product now applies onchain payment details and supports hundreds of assets, including native tokens and ERC-20. It also automatically converts payments to USDC at a guaranteed rate for merchants.
However, due to the challenges of providing similar capabilities on the Bitcoin blockchain without smart contracts and stablecoins, Coinbase has decided to remove support for native Bitcoin and other UTXO currencies.
Despite this change, buyers paying with Coinbase Commerce can still use Bitcoin if they have an account on the exchange.
