The town hall of Torrevieja, a city in Spain, has announced a digital transformation project that will allow merchants to accept payments with cryptocurrencies.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and the Association of Small and Medium-Sized Merchants, aims to make Torrevieja the first European city compatible with cryptocurrencies.
The initial phase of the project will focus on the use of digital assets for commerce, with plans to expand to other areas such as environmental initiatives and the financing of technology companies.
To support this transformation, the University of Alicante will offer courses on digital payments for local businesses. Although cryptocurrency payments have been allowed in Spain since 2015, there have been no previous attempts to develop them.
In addition, it should be noted that cryptocurrencies are not considered legal tender in Spain.
