El Salvador's Bitcoin advocate President Nayib Bukele appears headed for a second five-year term, according to exit polls showing him with a wide lead after the conclusion of voting on Sunday night.

The result was widely expected, as Bukele, who has been in office since 2019, enjoys huge popularity in the country and was leading the polls before the election with a wide lead.

He has said that according to his calculations, they have won the presidential elections with more than 85% of the votes and at least 58 of the 60 deputies in the Assembly.

Bukele caused surprise during his first term by combating gang violence with mass arrests and betting heavily on Bitcoin.

In 2021, El Salvador became the first country to adopt BTC as legal tender.
