Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is considering the possibility of allowing retail investors to access spot crypto ETFs.

Julia Leung, head of the department, has said in an interview with Bloomberg that the move is driven by an interest in "using innovative technology that boosts efficiency and customer experience."

The regulator last month updated its guidance on the activities of virtual asset service providers, expanding the range of investors who can participate in crypto ETFs.

The SFC has required organizations to screen clients through a virtual asset knowledge test before they can proceed with transactions. Notably, institutional and corporate investors are exempt from such scrutiny.

Hong Kong has registered three exchange-traded funds based on cryptocurrency futures.
