The French regulator of personal data (CNIL, for its French acronym) conducted on August 30 "inspections" at the Paris office of the Worldcoin project, Reuters has reported.

A representative of the regulator has said the visit took place as part of an ongoing investigation into the legality of the use of biometric data and did not provide additional details.

The Worldcoin team has previously said its project has been designed to protect personal privacy and strives to comply with regulatory requirements.

Worldcoin announced its official launch last July 24. The main product of the project, the World ID protocol, is based on zero-knowledge proofs. It is a mobile tool that allows identifying people by retina scan or phone number.

Regulators in several countries have shown interest in Worldcoin. For example, regulators in the UK, France, Germany and Argentina have been interested in the compliance of the collection and storage of citizens' personal information with current legislation.
