Reliance Retail, one of India's largest retailers, has just added support for rupee digital payments in one of its Freshpik stores and plans to expand this experience to all formats across the network, TechCrunch has reported.

V. Subramaniam, CEO of the company, has said the initiative is consistent with the desire to offer choice to consumers. To make a purchase, customers will need to scan a QR code.

He has said:

"Indians will get another efficient and secure alternative payment method to customers at our stores."

The integration of payments with the CBDC has been made possible through collaboration with ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Innovative Technologies.

India launched a pilot project in December last year to test the digital retail rupee among a limited number of consumers and merchants.
