The government of Catalonia intends to turn the Spanish region into a digital hub and launch its own metaverse, Daniel Marco, director general of Innovation and Digital Economy of Catalonia, has said.
Marco led the government's Smart Catalonia initiative in 2014, overseeing the transformation of Catalonia into a "smart country." With the advent of blockchain technology and the metaverse, the official began working to create a "fully digital economy inspired by the physical world."

According to Marco, the authorities plan to launch a "Catalan metaverse." He has explained:
"The Cataverse will be connected to the Catalan language and culture. We want local organizations that do something in the field of culture to be able to implement it in the metaverse."
Barcelona will also become a center for digital innovation, he has said. To achieve this goal, much will depend on attracting talented specialists. The government has implemented a number of programs to support talented young people.
