The company said in a press release that the so-called "Genesis" NFT Collection will feature 3D and animated interpretations of the "iconic athletes" featured on Sports Illustrated covers over the years, featuring at launch record-breaking Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky. Dawn Block, VP Collectibles, Electronics and Home at eBay, says that NFTs and blockchain technology are "revolutionizing the collectibles space, and are increasingly viewed as an investment opportunity for enthusiasts." He added:

"Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is now making coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors everywhere. This builds upon our commitment to deliver high passion, high value items to the eBay community of buyers and sellers."

The NFT collection consists of thirteen limited-edition tokens differentiated into a tier or rareness with starting price at $10. eBay says it will conduct additional NFT drops throughout the whole 2022. eBay first started allowing its users to sell NFTs in May last year as the e-commerce giant integrated new capabilities that brought blockchain-driven collectibles to the platform.
