Malaysia's Ministry of Communications has urged the government to use Bitcoin as an official payment method within the country, Decrypt has reported.

The move to grant Bitcoin the status of legal tender has reportedly been proposed by Malaysia's Deputy Communications Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin. He has said:

"We hope the government can allow this... This so that we can develop youth participation in crypto and assist them."

El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender in the country last year. Despite some disagreements, the Central American state has already received many advantages. Since legalizing BTC, the tourism sector has grown by 30%.

However, it is a bit surprising that Malaysia has made a similar proposal, since over the past few months the local authorities have demonstrated a hostile stance towards cryptos and miners.

Thus, last summer, the authorities seized more than 1,000 Bitcoin mining devices and destroyed them. The authorities said that in the course of their illegal activities, the miners stole $2 million in electricity, while the cost of the destroyed mining equipment was $1.26 million.
