Recall that Gemini applied for the license in early 2020, after the UK's exit from the EU. In 2021, the platform opened an office in Dublin and hired former Leveris strategy director Gillian Lynch as CEO of the division.
According to the Central Bank of Ireland's website, the regulator's approval will allow the crypto exchange to "issue on the territory of the country electronic money in accordance with the EU Regulation 2011."
Peter Oakes, a former central bank official and founder of Fintech Ireland, has said he believes Gemini will seek to obtain a local VASP (virtual asset service provider) license in the future, allowing the company to provide a full range of services.
