Western Union Ceases Operations in Russia and Belarus

Popular money transfer system Western Union has just announced via a statement it has suspended its operations in Russia and Belarus.

According to the announcement:

"We have thoroughly evaluated internal and external considerations, including the consequences for our valued teammates, partners, and customers. Ultimately, in light of the ongoing tragic impact of Russia’s prolonged assault on Ukraine, we have arrived at the decision to suspend our operations in Russia and Belarus."

The company planned to stop conducting transactions within Russia from April 1, 2022, focusing on international money transfers.

Yesterday, mobile payment systems Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay stopped working in Russia. Among other things, Google has limited the operation of its digital store, which means only free applications can be downloaded by Russian users.

It has recently became known the cloud computing platform Amazon Web Services has suspended the registration of new users from Russia and Belarus.
