The European Union (EU) could impose new sanctions on Russia due to its military operation in Ukraine that could end up affecting Russian crypto assets, Reuters has reported citing sources.

The publication claims the EU is waiting to see what the effect is of the sanctions it has already imposed on Russia before introducing new ones.

The bloc is ready to take additional economic measures against Russia if the situation in Ukraine deteriorates due to the Russian invasion of the country.

Some of the proposed measures include the introduction of restrictions on Russian crypto assets, as well as measures that will not allow Russia to circumvent sanctions with the help of Belarus.

The US authorities have previously announced they intend to strengthen the monitoring of sanctions circumvention by Russia with the help of cryptocurrencies.
