Barcelona, a Spanish professional soccer club, is developing its own metaverse and wants to create its own cryptocurrency to help the company to "survive financially" against clubs owned by big corporations and foreign investors, president Joan Laporta told ESPN. He added that Barcelona will also launch a range of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the foreseeable future.

Although Laporta did not clarify when exactly the company plans to launch its own cryptocurrency, he said the Spanish club has turned down "numerous offers" to partner with cryptocurrency companies as they want to focus on developing their own crypto.

"We do not have big corporations or shareholders behind us. That forces us to be imaginative, innovative, brave and be a step ahead in many areas that surround the sports industry," Laporta said.

Barcelona first announced plans to launch a collection of non-fungible tokens in November last year. A spokesperson for the soccer club said back then that Barcelona wants to issue NFT collection to better connect with its global audience.
