Alphabet Inc. CEO, Sundar Pichai, said during a recent earnings call he is closely watching the blockchain space as Web3 gains more attention, Bloomberg reports. He noted that Google's parent company wants to support blockchain-related innovations the best it can as other companies such as Block, Meta and Twitter have already embraced the technology.

"We are definitely looking at blockchain. It is such an interesting and powerful technology with broad applications," Pichai said.

iHodl reported earlier in January that Google hired former PayPal executive, Arnold Goldberg, to lead its payments division with a new course focused on cryptocurrencies. Bill Ready, Google's President of Commerce, said that Goldberg will help the IT giant with its payments business, including cryptocurrencies.

While the Mountain View-based is not accepting cryptocurrencies for transactions, Ready says the cryptocurrency market is something the company pays "a lot of attention to." In September last year, Google Cloud entered into a multi-year partnership agreement with Dapper Labs, a Canadian blockchain startup, to support its Flow blockchain that supports over 50 applications, including non-fungible token (NFT) collections like NBA Top Shot and CryptoKitties. The IT giant acts as a network operator to help Flow scale.
