MetaMask, a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet, has launched MetaMask Flask, a development kit that allows users experimenting with the wallet's functionality. The company said in an announcement that blockchain developers can experiment features in Flask before deploying them to the broader public.

The first feature rolled on MetaMask Flask is called Snaps and it allows developers to expand the functionality of the wallet at runtime. The initial version of Snaps allows only modification of the MetaMask UI in limited ways though. At a higher level, communication occurs via JSON-RPC requests and responses so that MetaMask's JSON-RPC API and change the behavior of the MetaMask application at runtime.
In October last year, MetaMask signed a partnership agreement between its institutional version — MetaMask Institutional (MMI) — BitGo, Qredo, and Cactus Custody. The partnership allowed organizations to leverage custody solutions in order to interact with the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.
