"I now look forward to having more free time in the months to come before I start building something new and exciting again. Onward!," Marcus added.

While it remains unclear what is the reason for the departure, Marcus says his "entrepreneurial DNA has been nudging" him for too many mornings in a row to continue ignoring Novi. Marcus joined Facebook in 2014. Prior to the social network, he worked at PayPal. In 2018, Marcus became the lead for Facebook's blockchain arm. He spent several years developing Novi, the digital wallet, and Diem, a stablecoin formerly known as Libra.

Marcus's departure comes after Senate Democrats called on Facebook to stop its Novi wallet initiative, according to a group letter to Mark Zuckerberg signed by US Senators Elizabeth Warren, Brian Schatz, Sherrod Brown, Tina Smith and Richard Blumenthal. The senators voiced their "strongest opposition" to the effort to launch the digital wallet.
