Attackers Hack Bitcoin.org and Organize a Fake Bitcoin Giveaway
Main page News, Hacker Attack

Unknown attackers have managed to gain access to Bitcoin.org, the oldest information resource about Bitcoin, and post a fake announcement about a cryptocurrency giveaway on its homepage. Domain registrar Namecheap has restricted access to the site.

Messages had previously appeared on Twitter about a pop-up window being displayed on the Bitcoin.org homepage asking users to transfer cryptos to a particular address and promised to double the funds sent.

The operator of Bitcoin.org, who uses the pseudonym Cobra, has said the project team is trying to figure out how the attackers gained access to the site. He has suggested the problem could be related to the services of Cloudflare, which provides CDN services, DDoS protection, secure resource access and DNS servers:

"Bitcoin.org hasn't been hacked, ever. And then we move to Cloudflare, and two months later we get hacked. Can you explain where you were routing my traffic too? Because my actual server didn't get any traffic during hack."
