Vocal Critic of Bitcoin Law in El Salvador Arrested on Fraud Charges

Computer analyst Mario Gómez, one of the vocal critics of El Salvador's recently passed Bitcoin Law, has reportedly been arrested on allegations of financial fraud, local news outlet La Prensa Grafica reports, citing Mario's mother, Elena de Gómez.

Shortly after the arrest, the local police tweeted that the case is related to sending false emails to many users of the banking system, where their account statements have been compromised.

Mario's mother claims that the police detained her son for no reason and that two cell phones were seized at the time of his arrest. The police, in turn, claim that the mobile devices seized from Gómez will be placed at the order of the Attorney General's Office for the "necessary technical expertise."

Meanwhile, El Salvador is about to release the country's own bitcoin (EXANTE: Bitcoin) wallet. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele said that the country will release the so-called Chivo wallet on September 7.
