Volume of Crypto-related Crimes Reaches $1B

Between July 2020 and July 2021, the volume of ransomware attacks and cryptocurrency-related crimes worldwide amounted to at least $1 billion, Izvestia has reported citing Kaspersky Lab experts.

According to them, the number of large attacks and blackmail attempts related to ransomware viruses exceeded 1,000 cases in 2021. The average ransom amount amounts up to approximately $250,000, but in some cases it amounted to as much as $5-10 million.

Among the main reasons behind the use of ransomware are the rising prices of cryptocurrencies as well as their increasing popularity.

According to Ransomwhere, in 2021, ransomware-related addresses received over $33 million in cryptocurrencies.
