The watchdog said in an announcement that the information should help it to identify or locate any person who, while acting at the direction or "under the control of a foreign government," participates in malicious cyber activities against US critical infrastructure.

The department added that reward payments may include payments in cryptocurrency. However, it remains unclear if the watchdog is willing to pay in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like monero (XMR).

The move comes amid reports that the Biden administration plans to track the transfers of cryptocurrencies used to pay hackers. The White House created a special division that will monitor the activities of hackers using ransomware viruses, announced Deputy National Security Adviser Anne Neuberger.
