John McAfee, 75, a British-American computer programmer and businessman, has reportedly found dead by an apparent suicide in a Spanish jail cell, Spanish newspaper El Pais reports. The news comes after it became known that the Spanish High Court authorized the extradition of McAfee to the United States.

The well-known entrepreneur was arrested back in October 2020. He was arrested at the request of the US Department of Justice for tax evasion. The indictment alleges he earned millions of dollars from 2014-2018 by touting various cryptocurrencies. In the US, McAfee could have faced a prison sentence of up to 30 years. The police are investigating the case, and the justice department reportedly says that everything "points to suicide."

Security personnel at the Brians 2 penitentiary tried to revive him, but the jail’s medical team certified his death, Bloomberg reports, citing a statement from the regional Catalan government. Reuters reports, citing McAfee's lawyer, that the businessman hanged himself in his prison cell.
