Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, a small Central American nation, has announced he intends to make Bitcoin legal tender in the country.

During the Bitcoin 2021 conference held in Miami, Florida, he said in a video he plans to apply to the country's authorities for recognition of the largest cryptocurrency on the market as legal tender in the country.

In addition, this has changed the profile picture of his Twitter account and has put an image in which he appears with lasers in his eyes, a meme that is often used by followers of cryptocurrencies to show their support.

He said in the announcement:

"We hope that this decision will be just the beginning in providing a space where some of the leading innovators can reimagine the future of finance, potentially helping billions around the world."
