Ethereum Devs Identify Vulnerability in EIP-1559

Ethereum developers have discovered a vulnerability in the proposal EIP-1559 that could lead to network congestion, Ethereum Foundation member Tim Beiko said.

EIP-1559 offers to extend a portion of transaction fees and helps reduce gas price volatility. The proposal also allows users to "tip" miners to speed up the confirmation of their transactions.

Developer Martin Holst Swende has highlighted that EIP-1559 has no limit on the maximum amount of such payments. This allows a potential attacker to enter a large number to overload the network, even if he does not have enough money to pay. Beiko explained:

"Prior to 1559, this is not possible because if you want to create a transaction with a huge gas price, you actually _need_ to have that amount of ETH, and if your txn is included, you will pay that amount."

The developers have fixed the vulnerability by adding the code proposed by Swende. Some customers have already implemented the fix.

EIP-1559 will be part of the hard fork London scheduled for July.
