BitMEX to Become Licensed Brokerage

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX will establish a licensed brokerage to offer OTC trading services. In an announcement, BitMEX CEO, Alexander Höptner, said that the exchange will "dramatically expand" its services and get additional licenses.

Particularly, the Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange wants not only to get a brokerage license, but also offer custodian services, full-service spot capabilities, and launch its own BitMEX Academy. While it remains unclear when exactly BitMEX plans to launch the above-mentioned services, it is not the first time Höptner mentions the exchange's plans to expand its services.

Earlier in March, Höptner said he was trying to engage with regulators all around the world to get to the point where BitMEX can "provide services on a regulated basis." Höptner joined BitMEX in December 2020. Prior to it, Höptner had been working at Börse Stuttgart GmbH and Euwax AG since 2018. He also held executive committee roles for Deutsche Börse AG for 15 years.
