Sophia the robot's digital work has been auctioned for $688,888 as a non-fungible token (NFT).

Sophia Instantiation is a 12-second video showing Sophia's interpretation of her own portrait, painted by artist Andrea Bonaceto. The NFT is also accompanied by a physical copy.

The top bid during the auction on the marketplace Nifty Gateway was placed by an anonymous collector with the nickname 888. He said on his Twitter account:

"I have goosebumps."

Sophia has responded that the "work was very inspiring on so many levels" and has promised to explain its meaning in the future.

Another 30 pieces created by Sophia in collaboration with Bonaceto have been auctioned. They ranged in price from $2,500 to $3,000.

The most expensive NFT so far remains Everydays: The First 5000 Days by digital artist Mike Winkelmann (Beeple), which sold for $69.3M.
