Coinsquare to Hand Over 16K Clients Data to Canadian Tax Watchdog

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinsquare will hand over the data of some users to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). According to a court filing, the exchange is required to submit a detailed list of all cryptocurrency and fiat currency transfers of users that had over $20,000 CDN between December 2014 — December 2020.

In total, the exchange is ordered to provide data on 16,500 largest customer accounts by trading volume in CDN dollars between 2014 and 2020.

The exchange is obliged to provide the data by April 6. This is the first time a Canadian court has made such a decision for a cryptocurrency exchange. Last November, the CRA requested full details of Coinsquare's users who have registered on the platform since early 2013. The claimed the data was necessary to verify that taxpayers comply with their obligations in relation to cryptocurrencies.
