Popular antivirus developer and crypto enthusiast John McAfee has said the charges brought by US authorities against him for alleged tax evasion are nothing more than an attack on all cryptos.

In particular, he claims the US authorities are using the case as an excuse to take action against cryptocurrencies.

He has said through his official Twitter account:

"The charges against me are absolutely ridiculous. I am being used as a scapegoat for the US to crackdown on crypto. This is an attack on all crypto. This is purely and simply the truth."

McAfee's lawyer, Andrew Gordon, has pointed out McAfee's tax evasion charges are one of the first to involve cryptos, "and certainly one of the highest profile cases of its kind".

The crypto enthusiast was arrested in Spain in October last year at the request of the US authorities. McAfee faces up to 100 years in prison.
