The speed of the service will be slowed for users in Russia starting today. The country's regulators have said the "primary slowdown of the service's speed" is a measure designed to force Twitter to comply with Russian law and protect Russians from "the influence of illegal content."

Roskomnadzor, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media of Russia, has reported that "since 2017 to the present time the Internet service Twitter has not removed content inciting minors to commit suicide, containing child pornography, as well as information on drug use." According to Roskomnadzor, the number of undeleted posts, despite the agency's request, exceeds 3,000.

Initially, access to Twitter from half of Russia's computers and from all mobile devices will be slowed down. The regulator has also threatened the possibility of blocking the service if Twitter continues to ignore requirements to remove illegal content.

The Russian authorities' decision comes after they announced lawsuits against the social network and four other social media companies for failing to remove posts about last month's nationwide protests over the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
