The ecosystem developers Nomadic Labs, Marigold, and Metastate said the new proposals for the upgrade contain minor bug fixes, additional improvements to performance and gas costs, and two new features: Sapling, and Tickets.

Sapling is a protocol that has been initially developed by the Electric Coin Company for the Zcash project. The protocol creates the so-called shielded transactions, operations that can be conducted only between shielded addresses.

"Our proposal allows smart contract developers to easily integrate Sapling in their smart contracts and create privacy-conscious applications," the developers said.

The developers also say they have created the new fifth period in order to simplify future updates. With the fifth period there will a five cycle (~ two weeks) gap between the adoption of the new protocol and the time when it is activated, the post says. The developers believe this delay will aid in assuring seamless protocol transitions.

iHodl reported in September that cryptocurrency exchange Gemini added support for shielded zcash (ZEC) withdrawals on its platform. The support shows that with the right management and the proper education, "regulators can get comfortable with privacy-enabling cryptos," Gemini says.

According to Zcash's official website, the shielded addresses include the privacy enhancements provided by zero-knowledge proofs. The Sapling network upgrade introduces a new shielded address for improved efficiency and functionality.
