Prior to Bitstamp, Sawyer co-founded Starling Bank, where he served as COO until 2019. Sawyer also worked as a consultant and advisor to other banks and founded Bluerock Consulting, a financial management consulting firm.

Bitstamp says Sawyer’s expertise in the global finance makes him "uniquely suited to lead Bitstamp."

"He understands the possibilities that cryptocurrency holds for the world and how to integrate it with existing financial structures," the exchange said.

Sawyer's appointment comes after Bitstamp introduced an additional layer of protection for the cryptocurrencies stored on the platform.
