Breitling, a Swiss maker of luxury watches founded 136 years ago, has started to issue digital certificates on the Ethereum blockchain, the company has reported in an official press release.

The watchmaker has teamed up with the non-profit organization Arianee to issue these digital passports that will allow users to verify the authenticity of the company's watches.

These passports will be issued for all watches made as of October 13.

Emmanuelle Collet, co-founder and CMO of Arianee, has said the protocol used to issue the certificates is based on the ERC-721 standard of the Ethereum, which is commonly used to issue non-fungible tokens (NFT).

This verification mechanism allows "watch owners to simply scan their electronic guarantee card with their smartphone camera to automatically download the private, encrypted digital wallet, which safely stores the digital passport."

It should be noted these digital certificates are transferable and include information such as the serial number of the watch and the digital warranty.
