Popular cryptocurrency enthusiast and anti-virus creator John McAfee has been arrested in Spain at the request of the United States for allegedly evading taxes, The Spectator Index reports.

The US Department of Justice has reported McAfee has been arrested for tax evasion and willful failure to file a tax return. He will be extradited to the United States.

In addition, yesterday it was reported McAfee has earned more than $11.6M in Bitcoin and Ethereum for promoting seven ICO campaigns in 2017-2018.

The SEC claims McAfee made false claims he was an investor or technical advisor to these ICOs in order to attract investors. At the same time, he tried to sell his own assets and paid third parties to support his marketing activities.

The 55-page lawsuit was filed yesterday in the Southern District Court of New York City. It also includes the name of former Team McAfee CEO Jimmy Watson, who is referred to as McAfee's bodyguard. The Apollo, Azhos, Skycoin, Luxcore blockchain projects and the Bitfi wallet are mentioned as strategic partners on the McAfee Team website. The SEC plans to prohibit them from "directly or indirectly participating in the issuance, purchase, offering or sale of any securities in the form of digital assets."
