The European Central Bank (ECB) has applied for registration of the "digital euro" trademark, Bloomberg has reported.

According to the news outlet, the ECB lawyers of the German firm Bock Legal filed an application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on September 22. The application has not yet been approved.

The measure suggests the regulator remains positive about the prospects for central bank digital currencies (CBDC). However, the ECB has not yet made a final decision on the launch of the digital euro. A report that is currently being prepared will determine the direction of the works. The president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, said recently:

"The Eurosystem has so far not made a decision on whether to introduce a digital euro. But, like many other central banks around the world, we are exploring the benefits, risks and operational challenges of doing so. The results of its research into a digital euro are expected to be released in the coming weeks."

Lagarde later clarified the digital euro should be a complement to existing fiat money, not a replacement.
