According to an official press release, IOTA Access was created to bring fine-grained access control to “any machine, device, or building without relying on a centralized system or requiring a constant internet connection.”

The current alpha version, which is released as a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), already supports implementation based on ARM Cortex-A running Embedded Linux.

"As the IOTA protocol continues to evolve, the products built on top of it offering layer 2 utilities will continue to be refined and progressed into Beta stages and full production readiness," the foundation said.

The foundation has already partnered with a British multinational automotive company Jaguar Land Rover, STMicroelectronics, ETO GRUPPE, BiiLabs, and others to extend the new framework to smart devices around the world.

Earlier in August 2020, IOTA became a "Key Innovator" in the H2020 +CityxChange research program. The +CityxChange program received investments from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program in the call for ‘Smart cities and communities.’
