According to an official press release, the Treasury has sanctioned three employees of the Internet Research Agency (IRA), Artem Lifshits, Anton Andreyev, and Darya Aslanova, for alleged support of the IRA’s cryptocurrency accounts.
The revealed addresses of digital wallets are tied to bitcoin (BTC), ethereum (ETH), litecoin (LTC), bitcoin sv (BSV), z cash (ZEC), and dash (DASH).
The Treasury claims that IRA uses cryptos "to fund activities in furtherance of their ongoing malign influence operations around the world."
The regulator has also sanctioned a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Andrii Derkach "for his efforts to influence the 2020 US presidential election."
According to Treasury, Derkach has been "an active Russian agent for over a decade, maintaining close connections with the Russian Intelligence Services."
"Today’s designation of Derkach is focused on exposing Russian malign influence campaigns and protecting our upcoming elections from foreign interference," the regulator added.
iHodl earlier reported that the US President Donald Trump asked Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to"go after bitcoin" during a meeting on trade sanctions and tariffs against China back in May 2018.
Former US national security advisor John Bolton revealed in his book "The Room Where It Happened" that the 45th President of the United States tried to take his fight against bitcoin to the regulatory level.
