CoD: Warzone Hackers Now Demand Bitcoin for Stolen Accounts

Hackers are now after the popular online video game Call of Duty: Warzone as they are stealing user accounts, demanding a ransom in bitcoin (EXANTE: Bitcoin).

According to Motherboard, the game's publisher Activision is slow in responding to complaints from users or not reacting at all.

CoD: Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale video game released on March 10, 2020. In Warzone, players fight to be the last among 150 players. As people play more, they gain experience to unlock new weapons or complete specific tasks unlock cosmetic items.

Hackers Attack Argentinian Government, Demand $4M in Bitcoin

All the game progress is saved to the player's Activision account, which means that if a user loses access to the account, he also essentially loses his character, items, and rating.

"I definitely had some stuff I spent money on," said a user under the alias osandy23.

For each hacked account, the hackers are demanding a ransom of 400 in BTC.

"If you wants our helps to prevent to leak ur deta [sic] and information and bank account etc, and help to gets your account back clarity need pay 400$ in below address," the hackers wrote.

Motherboard states the hackers have already managed to receive a total of 1.2 BTC.

In August, one of the top earning travel companies, CWT (formerly known as Carlson Wagonlit Travel), paid a $4.5 million in bitcoins to hackers who managed to steal sensitive corporate files and compromised 30,000 computers offline.

The hackers reportedly used a ransomware called Ragnar Locker, that encrypts computer files and makes it impossible to use them until the victim pays the ransom.
