Altana Digital Currency Fund Co-founder and CIO Alistair Milne noted that the hacker is changing account email addresses, hiding replies, etc.

"You can't do these things via API. At this point I doubt any account is safe," Milne added.

Ripple CTO David Schwartz says that all the compromised accounts used third party scheduling/monitoring services that had read/write app access to their accounts.

Twitter says it is aware of a security incident impacting accounts.

"We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly," Twitter's representative added.

Last year, Twitter identified a bug that made it "collect iOS location data from some of its users and shared it with one of its trusted partners," the company said in a statement.

The bug affected users who had more than one Twitter account registered on their iOS devices and had used the location function in at least one of their accounts.
