US President Donald Trump reportedly asked Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to "go after Bitcoin" during a meeting on trade sanctions and tariffs against China back in May 2018.
Former US national security advisor John Bolton revealed in his book "The Room Where It Happened" that Donald Trump tried to take his fight against Bitcoin to the regulatory level.
The president of the United States published on Twitter in July 2019 that "Bitcoin is not money" and that it "is based on thing air" to later attack Facebook and its stablecoin Libra.
Shortly after this, the Secretary of the Treasury backed Trump's position in the media by saying the White House was "looking at all of the crypto assets" and subsequently claiming that BTC and other cryptos are used for money laundering more often than cash.
However, Donald Trump has also helped Bitcoin without realizing it, as he appointed Mick Mulvaney as the White House chief of staff in October 2018. Mulvaney is a Bitcoin advocate and has described it as a currency "not manipulatable by any government."
