User Pays $2.6M Fee for a $86,390 ETH Transaction

A transaction of $86,390 in Ethereum was conducted on the Ethereum network yesterday at around 12:00 am ET. This should not be strange. However, what has caught the attention of the whole crypto community is the fact that the user has paid an extremely high fee - $2.6M.

The same user paid on Wednesday a $2.5M fee for a $133 transaction.

Bitfly, the operator of Ethermine, the mining pool that mined the transaction, has said:

"We believe that this was an accident and in order to resolve this issue the tx sender should contact us... immediately."

Alex Manuskin, blockchain researcher at crypto wallet ZenGo, believes this is most likely a mistake and not an attempt to launder money as some people had suggested.

It looks like the problem may be related to a confusion between the funds sent and the gas (fee) paid. The nature of the transaction suggests it has been carried out by a bot, probably belonging to a crypto exchange, and not by a person.
