Tech giant Microsoft has just announced the launch of ION, its decentralized identity tool, on the Bitcoin blockchain.

According to the announcement, the company has launched the public beta version of the solution.

Decentralized identity tools such as ION allow users to have greater control over their credentials by creating unique cryptographically verifiable identifiers.

By using these type of systems, users can secure their own information as well as verify other people's identities using a public key infrastructure, avoiding this way having to transfer their data to giants like Facebook or Google.

The aim of the Identity Overlay Network (ION) is to provide users with a decentralized identifier (DID) that can replace the need for user names.

The project has been developed by Microsoft in collaboration with the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), a consortium whose goal is to create technical standards for decentralized identity systems.

ION operates separately from Microsoft, which means transactions will be verified only on the Bitcoin blockchain.
