The South Korean government is sponsoring the development of a blockchain-based identification system for autonomous vehicles, a local news outlet Aju Business Daily has learned.
The system testing will take place in Sejong, a special self-governing Korean city. The blockchain system will reportedly be able to verify and protect the digital identification of vehicles, as well as their internal systems.
The project is led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, a state internet technology watchdog.
"We expect this technology platform to greatly increase the credibility of data by strengthening the security of information shared by cars and their control tower," a Sejong official said.
A consortium of technology companies, including LG CNS, the information technology department of the LG Group and Unmanned Solution, a South Korean autonomous shuttle manufacturer is also included in development of the blockchain-based verification platform.
The consortium will focus on creating blockchain-based decentralized (DID) verification technology to prevent illegal cloning of self-driving car identifiers.
