A new proposal submitted by the Ukrainian government calls for the country's nuclear plants to be used to mine Bitcoin and other cryptos.

Ukraine's acting energy minister Olha Buslavets has sent a letter to Energoatom, the country's state-owned nuclear power plant operator, suggesting that the excess energy generated could be used to mine cryptocurrencies.

The country's nuclear power plants are generating excess energy due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The letter, which has been posted on the Facebook account of a member of the country's parliament, says that:

"To work out, together with Energoatom and the Energoatom Trading division, the regulatory and technical issues of the possible implementation of cryptocurrency mining projects in order to provide additional markets for the electricity generated by nuclear power plants."

According to the letter, tomorrow May 8 is the deadline for Energoatom to explore possible ways to mine cryptos.

Ukraine has adopted a permissive attitude towards cryptocurrency mining, since at the beginning of the year the country's Ministry of Digital Transformation said that he does not plan to regulate the industry as it is already self-governed by blockchain consensus rules.
