The Heifer International charity foundation has joined the Libra Association, becoming the 23rd member of the association, iHodl Russia reports. The non-profit organization Heifer International fights poverty and hunger by helping smallholders.

According to UN estimates, less than 10% of the smallholders have access to a reliable loan, and in total about 1.7 billion adults in the world do not have a bank account.

"We believe the Libra project has the potential to deliver a lower-cost, more accessible and more connected global financial system," said President and CEO of Heifer International Pierre Ferrari.

The fund has been accepting donations in bitcoins (EXANTE: Bitcoin), implementing the initiative along with the BitGo service since 2016.

Earlier iHodl reported that such major payment companies as Visa, Mastercard and PayPal decided to leave the Libra Association over the problems with self-regulation.

Previously the Libra Association abandoned plans to create a single global digital currency, provided with a basket of national fiat currencies.

Now the association plans to create several stablecoins, each of which will be tied to different fiat currencies, including US dollar, euro, British pound and Singapore dollar.
