La Banque de France, which is the central bank of France, has issued an official statement in which it called for applications to experiment with the use of a "digital euro issued for interbank settlements."

The goal of the experiment is reportedly to explore the potentialities offered by the digital asset and to identify concrete cases integrating central bank digital currency (CBDC).

The financial institution claims the experiment is focused on identifying how innovative technologies "could improve the efficiency and fluidity of payment systems and financial infrastructures."

  • The submission deadline for digital applications is set on 15 May 2020 at 3 pm. (CET)
  • Interviews with applicants submitting eligible applications: June 2020
  • Selection of applications: 10 July 2020

The bank claims only 10 applications to be chosen (each application can include several experiments).

Earlier the ex-governor of the Bank of France Christian Noyer said that large financial institutions will be able to launch their own CBDC for a wide range of consumers no earlier than in the next 10 years.
