Popular graphics cards maker NVIDIA has called on crypto miners to contribute to the fight against the coronavirus epidemic by sharing the computing power of their devices.

The company has reported through Reddit the "Folding@home" initiative is accepting "donations" of computing power from users' GPUs, which is distributed to a global network that is working on the research of the COVID-19 as well as other diseases.

The company has extended its appeal to other industry actors such as Steel Series, NZXT and Razer, while Intel Gaming and MSI have also responded to the petition.

Even though the message was initially addressed at gamers, crypto miners can also participate, as the equipment needed to mine cryptocurrencies is so powerful it can contribute greatly to the cause.

Most of the projects taking part in the Folding@home initiative are working on finding a vaccine, identifying a protease capable of inhibiting the virus, or isolating an antibody.

The coronavirus epidemic is still affecting countries all over the world. At press time, it has already infected over 173,000 people and caused more than 7,000 deaths in 152 countries, areas o territories.
