The municipality of Zermatt, Switzerland has announced it will accept bitcoin (EXANTE: Bitcoin) as a payment method for local taxes.

As official announcement states, a point-of-sale provided by a local crypto-focused company called Bitcoin Suisse has been installed in the Zermatt town hall.

Bitcoin Suisse Head Crypto Payments Armin Schmid claims that by accepting bitcoin as a means of payment, Zermatt "finds itself once more among the pioneers and supporting a growing ecosystem of cryptocurrencies."

Mayor of Zermatt Romy Biner-Hauser says that an innovative, pioneering spirit "is one of the trademarks of Zermatt."

"This is why Zermatt is happy to support residents in providing them with the solutions they require," Biner-Hauser added.

Initially, the very first city in Switzerland to accept Bitcoin as a payment method was Zug back in 2016.

However, in 2018 Swiss watchdog began to tighten any crypto-related activity in the country. For example, Switzerland-based cantonal court of Zug shut down cryptocurrency mining firm Envion AG for an alleged unauthorized Initial Coin Offering (ICO).
